Mayflower 2020 Commemoration Gifts
Just two short years from now, we will be marking the 400th anniversary of the voyage of the Mayflower and the founding of Plymouth Colony.  This is an exciting opportunity to commemorate the pilgrims and the Mayflower landing and to share the inspirational story.  As we draw closer to 2020, there will be opportunities where we will need your financial support.  Whether you have an ancestor who was a pilgrim or not, we are asking for your help to make our celebration events a reality.

Stanley London has partnered with the San Diego Colony Mayflower Society to help raise money to fund these events.  Stanley London offers replicas of maritime instruments used during Mayflower times.  Each instrument is engraved to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower voyage.  These instruments make great gifts as well as timeless keepsakes and help our Mayflower Society achieve its goals.

The Stanley London Solid Brass Boxed Clock with Quartz Movement is a beautiful modern reproduction of an antique British nautical clock in a handsome brass-inlaid hardwood box.  An accurate timepiece is required for determination of the ship's location at sea using celestial navigation.  Before the development of extremely accurate chronometers, only the latitude could be calculated.  With precise clocks, the ship's longitude could also be determined, however an error of only one second of time is equal to a 1/4 nautical mile error at the equator.
This accurate quartz clock is powered by a single common AA battery.  The 4 1/4 inch (10.8 cm) diameter solid brass clock is fully gimbaled with a solid brass gimbal set.  The gimbal arrangement allows the clock to remain level even as the ship heels.  The clock's face is 3 inches (7.6 cm) in diameter, and the hardwood case measures 6 1/4 inches (15.9 cm) square and 4 3/8 inches (11 cm) tall.  The boxed clock weighs a rather heavy 3.4 pounds (1.6 kg) and is a beautiful addition to a nautical collection or executive's desk.  The front of the hardwood case has a brass slide clasp and the box's corners are strengthened with solid brass inlaid splines.
Affixed to the inside lid is a plaque engraved with an exclusive, commemorative Mayflower Society artwork celebrating the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower voyage.

This handsome piano-finish quartz desk clock also features a magnetic compass in its base.  The clock-compass case is sculpted from a large 3 1/2 inch (8.6 cm) cube of seasoned solid mahogany, and is then expertly sanded, stained, and finished with 12 coats of hand-rubbed lacquer for an unbelievably deep piano grade finish.  The clock and compass bezels, and the inset hinges are crafted from solid brass with a rich gold plating.  The clock features a highly accurate battery operated Japanese quartz movement (battery included), and a fully functional magnetic compass is inset into the mahogany base.  The clock compass is 2 7/8 inches (7.3 cm) tall with the lid closed, 3 1/2 inches (8.6 cm) square, and weighs a solid 14.5 ounces (410 grams).  The clock bezel is 2 1/4 inches (5.7 cm) in diameter and the compass bezel is 1 3/4 inches (5.5 cm) in diameter.  The bottom of the clock compass is covered with felt to protect your fine furniture.

Solid Brass Nocturnal with Hardwood Stand

This is a full size faithful solid brass reproduction of the nocturnal, which was an early sea-faring navigational instrument.  The nocturnal or "night disc," was used in navigation to calculate the latitude and the time at night.  First described in 1272, this simple method of latitude determination using the nocturnal continued to be improved upon until its use faded in the late fifteenth century.
The nocturnal is elaborately decorated and has a shape roughly similar to that of a hand mirror.  Corresponding to the months of the year, the circumference was divided into twelve equal parts.  An "index" or "pointer" pivoted from the disc's center.  During use, the nocturnal was placed at arm's length with the North Star Polaris visible through a hole in the center.  The second brightest star in Ursa Minor, Kobach, which circles the pole star Polaris, is aligned with the pointer.  The nocturnal's scale would yield a correction in arcminutes, to be applied to Polaris.  If the slight distance of Polaris from the true pole was not compensated, it could result in a 50-mile error.
The nocturnal was also able to determine the time from the celestial clock that rotates around Polaris.  Scales around the perimeter were used to set the month and day.  The readings taken would yield the time.
The nocturnal measures 4 1/2 inches (11.4 cm) in diameter, 5 1/2 inches (14.0 cm) tall, and weighs a solid 9.1 ounces (258 grams).  The hardwood base is 4 1/2 inches (11.4 cm) wide and 2 1/8 inches (5.4 cm) deep.
Unfortunately, we are unable to engrave this item so the commemorative Mayflower artwork is not available.
