Boatswain's Pipes $10.50 to $17.00 The boatswain's pipe (or boatswain's flute, bosun's whistle, or bosun's call) is one of the oldest and most distinctive pieces of nautical equipment.  It was used in Greece and Rome to keep the stroke of galley slaves and during the Crusades the pipe was used to call English cross bowmen on deck for attack.  Later on, it was used to signal various events such as knock-off and the boarding of officials due to its shrill tune that could be heard above most of the activity on board.  So crucial to the well-being of the ship that this signaling device became a badge of office and honor aboard the sailing ships of the British and American Navy. We offer this beautifully detailed solid brass and copper reproduction of a boatswain's pipe, mounted on a quality brass key chain.  Both sides of the pipe feature a copper anchor design and yes, it really whistles.  The boatswain's pipe is 3 3/16 inches (8.1 cm) long and weighs .78 ounces (22 grams).
