$54 The Old World planisphere inlaid into the box top was created in 1630 by Great Dutch iconographer Henri Hondius. The intricate map exhibits the geographical knowledge compiled during an age of intense world exploration. Hondius was one of the most accomplished engravers of his time and elevated the art of map ornamentation to its highest level of sophistication through his utilization of an elegant baroque framework and delicate shading. Due to their fascination of the iridescent nature of rare South American butterfly wings, artists developed a secret embossing technique. So, when viewed from various angles, the map etching has an iridescent quality that changes colors and contrast. A custom engraved brass plaque can be mounted on the inside lid of the box. The top and bottom surfaces of the box's interior are lined with black felt and four felt feet protect the bottom of the box from scratches. A black draw string gift bag accompanies the black lacquered box to ensure that its fine finish is protected. The exterior of the box measures 7 1/2 inches (19 cm) wide, 5 1/2 inches (14 cm) deep, 2 inches (5 cm) tall, and weighs 14.1 ounces (400 grams). This Black Lacquered Nautical Old World Map Box is ideal for jewelry and watches, or simply for adorning your office or bedroom. The Black Lacquered Nautical Old World Map Box is available for only $54. We also offer a Hardwood Case with Inlaid Compass Rose. |
